During Sydney Design week 2001 David Jones, a leading Australian
department store coverted a corner window dedicated for the
display of new design work for the event.
The window was built up over a number of days as a semi domestic
scene incorporating furniture and lighting.
Instead of using existing furniture, a brief was developed
where I could use existing David Jones floor stock in more
interesting ways.
Japanese Sushi plates were used as a wall tiling system that
could be swivelled and reorganised to play with colours, and
patterns.
San Pellegrino bottles became a coat rack and hatstand.
Alessi fruit bowls were turned into lamps and a floor rug,
into a seat.
The more complex and task specific objects become, the less
adaptable they tend to be. There is a certain generosity in
a simple object that lets your mind play.
I think it is important to let your imagination run whenever
it has the chance.
Diary:
Day 1: Thursday 10/08/01 8am
Arrived 15 Minutes late. Rush into windows. Feel naked. Fully
clothed. Begin painting. Gulf red over mission Brown.
Day 1: Thursday 10/08/01 Midday
Begin painting stripes. Before I started I had no idea how
I would paint the colours I had chosen into the window. Stripes
seemed a logical option. A coloured barcode.
Day 1: Thursday 10/08/01 Overtime.
Had to strengthen the visual impact of the window immediately.
Plates had arrived from the production company CFX. No coloured
plates had arrived. Designed a pattern to
catch the light. A ripple.
Day 2: Friday 11/08/01 Midday
Coloured plates arrived in from CFX. Re organised plates on
poles. Randomised colour pattern. Plates arranged to be a
rough play on the David Jones symbol. Touch-ups.
Day 3: Saturday 12/08/01 Midday
Installed "San pellegrino coat rack". Painted the
stipes on too early. The unset paint played havoc with the
bottle arrangements. As was hoped, the liquid in the bottles
drew out the light emitted
from the fluorescent tubes so that each bottle glowed from
within.
Day 4: Sunday 13/08/01 midday
Installed "Your wet eyes tell me you love me" lamps.
Tried to face them toward people coming from St James station
and from the nearby arcades. Ran across the intersection a
number of times. Nearly got hit. Twice.
Day 5: Monday 14/08/01
Installed seat. Plenty of filming for the lifestyle channel
that day. Spent a lot of time pulling things apart and putting
them back together.
Installed "Only when im like this" - a chair made
out of a mohair rug on fibreglass and resin
